Boston Scientific Corporation is a renowned global medical device manufacturer specializing in developing advanced and minimally invasive medical solutions to promote better health and longevity for individuals worldwide.
๏ปฟThe company engaged HGA Architects, based in Minneapolis, MN, to design a new 72,000-square-foot, two-story building at their Maple Grove, MN headquarters to expand their production capabilities for their Cardiovascular group.
Boston Scientific required a new building linked to its current facility to enhance its operational capacity via a 103-foot skyway enclosed with curtainwall on both sides. Moreover, the new structure's exterior was designed to incorporate a combination of architectural precast panels, metal panels, and aluminum curtain walls to enclose the building shell.
HGA Architects enlisted the expertise of Mortenson Construction, based in Minneapolis, MN, to undertake this sizable project. Due to the successful collaborations between Mortenson and W. L. Hall Company on past projects, the former approached us to provide and install roughly 10,700 square feet of glazed aluminum curtainwall, 150 lineal feet of glazed guardrail for the feature stairwell, as well as other miscellaneous interior glazing.
The curtainwall system utilized for this project was a four-sided structural silicone glazing (SSG) system featuring custom depth vertical face covers strategically positioned. The original design involved the custom face covers being supported by outrigger brackets protruding from the face of the curtainwall system.
Due to cost concerns, W. L. Hall Company suggested additional possibilities to achieve the same look but at a lower cost. This was achieved by a similar look using some of the curtainwall manufacturer's standard extrusions, ultimately saving Boston Scientific up-front construction costs, and making the installation more efficient without compromising HGA's design intent.
In collaboration with W. L. Hall Company, their crane vendor, and Mortenson Construction, a detailed pick plan was formulated to ensure that the mobile crane used during the glass installation would not cause any harm to the ground or underground utilities and structures. A suitable location for the crane was identified after extensive load calculations and thorough site assessments.
We are delighted to announce the successful and timely completion of the new building and connected skyway project, which was a highly gratifying collaboration with Mortenson, HGA, and Boston Scientific.
